Holidays...

*Framed my Typo T-Towel (Thxs for idea Katrina!) *We have a hand towel rail! *Mum's 50 yo bathroom tile framed as a reno momento. *The mirror bedsides have made it upstairs!

 The school holidays have finished here in NSW and J has returned to school, unfortunately without much enthusiasm. We had a very lazy two weeks at home. 

Lots of leisurely sleep-ins and pj mooching!

We got a few small chores knocked over and some arty projects completed.

 J and I ventured into Sydney and stayed in Newtown at my daughter's flat for a few days. She cooked up a storm and pampered us no end...We took J to Luna Park on the windiest day... it was looking tired but provided us with lots of fun, nonetheless. The bumper cars and giant slides being faves with J and S's BF, M.

I stuck to laughing at myself in the warping mirrors!

Bits and Bobs...

 H e l l o  there!

I've been M.I.A. after misplacing my Bloggy Mojo.....and have been busy with life. 

It's all Groovy Baby! here again now though!

J's on school holidays (yay!) and we've been mooching about, doing nothing in particular!

Mum and Dad's reno is complete and I'll take some pics to share soon. The bathrooms and kitchen have been given aesthetic and practical ticks of approval whist the cosmetic updates have really freshened the whole mood of their home. Phew!

 Celebrations for my 50th birthday have been indefinitely postponed. The day came and went whilst we were all trying to digest poor follow up results regarding Dad's battle with Cancer. He's got more surgery to endure in the coming month.....every fibre of my being is crossed for a positive outcome.

But, hey! I'm happy to stay 49 awhile longer!

Unsurprisingly, nothing much has happened on our own home front, though I did find time to design  the following items which are currently being made:

• The base of the coffee table posted about HERE is now being powder coated

• A vanity for the guest ensuite is on order

(It will look similar to the one I had made for the main bathroom, below)

• The mirrored shaving cabinet for the guest ensuite is on order
• And a custom entertainment unit for the family room is being made too.

This means that there will be LOTS more to show & tell soon!!!!

Bits 'n Bobs

 We are in the middle of the first week of school holidays here. Holidays = Sleep-ins = Bliss. 

J's been busy with 'sleepovers' which seem to be the 11-year-old thing-to-do. I miss him.

 David and I took J and a mate to Singleton to visit the Australian Army Infantry Museum (David taking a day off work to do so) on the recommendation of a fave blogger. Might've been a good idea to check their opening times....closed on Tuesdays nearly caused bloody WW3!

Anywho...the four hour drive included a lovely lunch at the Potters Hotel Brewery. Open fire, great food, a game of pool, choc tops...no more needs to be said, really.

 The steel base for my 'wish-list', family room coffee table is complete! (planned way back HERE). Now I need to get it powder coated and the timber top made. (Might not be pressing Davey for this ATM....LOL!)

The Main Bathroom mirrors are in; there's NO hiding! (1) but I'm yet to clean and style...

Still sorting through Ray's belongings and preparing a worthy Memorial Service (2 & 3)

My heart melted when my son gave me these after a play day at a mates. 11 years old and 'man' enough to give these to me in front of them. Mwaaah! (6)

Over joyed when Davey offered to cook....(8) but W.T.F has he done to my oven?!

(9) A local riding a 'static wave' as Avoca Lake burst through it's bank into the sea. Amazing!

Size Matters...

David and I have been building / renovating for quite some time. 

As David's reputation as a builder has grown, so has the size and value of the projects he undertakes both professionally, and for us personally.

So how challenging can a small project be?

As I am quickly discovering...very!

Generous spaces usually allow several options for lay-out, style, fixtures and colour. Not so the small space. Every centimetre has to prove it's worth and vie for position; functionality must take precedence over aesthetics. This often translates to one 'best' layout and flows through similarly to other design elements which become decided through practical elimination rather than by choice.

Add to such a project brief a limited budget, catering for the special physical needs of the client and the emotional attachment of said project being for a friend or family member, and the challenges increase exponentially!

Eons ago, I worked for a furniture manufacturer & retailer who taught me a valuable lesson in relativity. Regardless of the size of a table for example, the workmanship was the same in the construction of the 'expensive bits' (mortise & tenon joints, hand turned legs) and therefor the cost of  any additional length to the tabletop was relatively minor. Half the size is not half the value and so too a small house is more expensive than a large one on a per square metre ratio, regardless of whether building new or renovating.

 The Terrigal Project provided many challenges such as these which were successfully addressed. (The full project conclusion can be seen HERE) My own parent's house is our current project and as my childhood home it's as emotionally charged as they get!

 Small house = Big design challenges!
