Holidays...

*Framed my Typo T-Towel (Thxs for idea Katrina!) *We have a hand towel rail! *Mum's 50 yo bathroom tile framed as a reno momento. *The mirror bedsides have made it upstairs!

 The school holidays have finished here in NSW and J has returned to school, unfortunately without much enthusiasm. We had a very lazy two weeks at home. 

Lots of leisurely sleep-ins and pj mooching!

We got a few small chores knocked over and some arty projects completed.

 J and I ventured into Sydney and stayed in Newtown at my daughter's flat for a few days. She cooked up a storm and pampered us no end...We took J to Luna Park on the windiest day... it was looking tired but provided us with lots of fun, nonetheless. The bumper cars and giant slides being faves with J and S's BF, M.

I stuck to laughing at myself in the warping mirrors!

Main Bathroom update!

 I FINALLY have one bathroom 95 % complete!

I am very, very happy with how it has turned out and really glad I decided to omit the second basin at the last minute. There are some minor lighting issues to deal with and the hand towel rail to be installed when Davey has the time but at least we're fully functional! Whoop, whoop!

It's been very flat around here after the sad passing of David's father. 

J has been sick with a terrible flu and ear infection, so we've been hanging close to home most days.

Today provided magnificent weather so we spent a few hours soaking up the sunshine at Terrigal, enjoying a hearty winter lunch. I think it was just what we needed.

I've been spending time at home helping my Mum and Dad with their renovation plans. So far we have nutted out the bathroom and kitchen layouts via email and one mammoth four hour phone call!. We went to visit A in her new apartment last week and I realised that the space-saving solution to the location of Mum & Dad's microwave was in one of the snaps I had taken! Serendipity!

I have to make a decision this week about our kitchen benchtop material too. I've scored a Honed Carrara Marble benchtop. It will cost $500 for re-polishing and re-cutting new sink holes only. It's not the most beautiful piece of marble nor the extra big size I was planning but at this low cost, I'm VERY tempted! Thoughts?

 And updated J's bed linen, yet again! I think this is my fave so far... 

I tried my hand at concocting a recipe-less, retrolicious Nachos too and it was yummy! So pleased with myself!

In housey news....the main bathroom vanity is in! I'm thrilled with my choice of white for the top (Ceasarstone Snow) and cabinet (Dulux White on White - satin finish) and also my last minute decision to delete the second bowl to allow greater storage both on and under the bench. The mirrors have been ordered too so we are now close to finishing this room. Hooray!

Onto the next room...

 After high-fiving ourselves silly over the final completion of two rooms, we have taken our own advice and are going to focus on finishing all the half finished rooms next. I first suggested this over a year ago and posted the plan of action HERE. Well, at least we're consistent...ly... slow! LOL!

The problem encountered then was locating a cost effective joinery to cut the melamine sheeting for the vanity carcass (The one we had been using had closed down). We eventually chose a well known national company and tried them out with the linen cupboard shelving. Unfortunately, they didn't use a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutting machine which meant small inaccuracies in the dimensions, making tedious work for assembly with lots of planeing. Grrrr.

Any hoo, we'll try someone else for the main bathroom vanity but enquire about their cutting method first!. I have also since lost the vanity plan (although this old blog pic would have sufficed) and am now re-thinking the design. We were going to have two basins on a floating bench, behind which will be a wall of mirror. I still like this concept but am concerned about the limited storage for a main bathroom.

Below is the temporary set up we've got showing the vanity bowl and tapware purchased. 

I'm thinking of deleting the planned right hand bowl and having a wider bench space with a big drawer for storage. Maybe with a handle that doubles as a hand-towel rail.

 Although we will have a bowl and tap 'spare' we can always store them for another project. The vanity top will need to be a white composite stone with this change too as I don't have a large slab of Crema Perla Marble to match the floor / walls in this room. (With two basins we did).

What are your thoughts?

I've also deleted the idea of wall sconces either side of the heated towel rails. After three purchases all looking wrong, I give up! David has agreed and the electrician can terminate the wiring. Easy Peasy!

Main bathroom wall lights....Take three!

 I'm still struggling with the selection of wall lights for the main bathroom. After previously purchasing these and realising they were wrong, I tried another style.

No matter whether placed horizontally or vertically, they too weren't right so back they've gone.

 So now we're at Take three. I'm wondering if they're even necessary at this point and am seriously considering just giving them a miss.

Or....

do I slowly work my way through these to try and find 'the one'?

I wonder if I printed out a scaled picture and stuck it on the wall, would it help give me the correct feeling to help me decide. (Without the buy, try and disappointing return scenario on repeat!)

What do you do when faced with a decorating quandary?

Why am I in the dark with lighting?

Assisting with the planning and implementation of ideas for someone else's renovation has made me want to see some progress here. I thought that if I finished the downstairs rooms, one at a time rather than tackling the enormous upstairs area, I might make some quick progress. (Visually at least!)

Starting with the main bathroom, I needs a custom vanity (I already have the 2x sinks and tap ware), a mirror wall and two wall sconces. Easy Peasy eh?

 I measured and sketched, then Davo got involved and he re-measured and then I re-sketched (LOL!) how the 'floating' vanity was to be constructed. Off I went to our joiner and....he's closed down!!! Now I need to find someone new, get quotes, etc...Grrrr.

OK, not to be thwarted (mirror can't be actioned till after vanity installed), I thought I'd purchase the wall sconces for either side of the heated towel rails.

This is what I chose:

Ordered, brought home and Eeeek! they looked really wrong in the room! Back they went and now I've ordered these:

And of course they were 4 x the price! Not feeling too confident if truth be told!
And the major bummer with all this? Still not one room finished!

 

 Couldn't even be bothered with tidying up the mess that the temporary arrangement is in so I've returned to my Mantra (or a variance) yet again.....
