My girlfriend J phoned a few days ago looking for some bedding advice and after her call I thought I'd do a quick reconnaissance of the latest offerings from around the traps. I stumbled upon this textural delight from Kip & Co; scrumptious dark grey velvet....perfect for winter don't you think? The other colours offered are divine too; burnt orange, teal, cantaloupe and fuchsia. Yum!

David and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary on Tuesday. Neither of us felt like going out mid week so I offered to cook a gourmet, candle-lit dinner at home. David's request? Sausages, peas, mash & gravy. W.T.F....

We've had some exciting deliveries here this week. Boring visually, but those metal sheets above will complete the two front veranda roofs and gutters! Hooray!

 And these unbelievably heavy channel thingies below, are for the frame less glass hand rails.

Thought I'd start investigating flooring options for the master en suite. Fell in love with these hexagonal Calcutta marble mosaics which typically require me to sell a child to obtain. Maybe I should stick with the same 400 x 400 mm size tile I've used in the other bathrooms ? ? ?

I could use the hex as a feature under the shaving cabinet and in the bath niche. Thoughts?

 I bought this wire wrapped-glass-based lamp eons ago for the family room. I unpacked it and popped it into position but it just looks wrong. So much for forward planning. Humph.
Might look better in the playroom....

  

School Holidays have begun here today. Yay! And I've got a stash of magazines (print and digital form) to read with lazy cups of tea in bed...he he! For the first time, I've bought H & G in digital format for my iPad. I hate piles of magazines lying around making me feel guilty! Hopefully, when my subscriptions expire, I'll read all my faves this way instead.

Cute

Now that my two daughters have flown the nest, our predominately female home has become principally male. Having been raised with two sisters, this is a first-time experience for me. And, boy is it taking some getting used to!

My decorating style is quite masculine in many ways but I'm currently being drawn to pastel pink. 

I wonder if it's a subconscious reaction? 

Like-wise, my lack of ankle biters have me pondering all the cute stuff that pops into my inbox. 

Go figure.

Here's the best stuff I've found for those still with pink little cherubs...

shoe cupboard

 Well, Davey finally got round to fitting out my the main bedroom shoe cupboard! Yippee!!!!

 You'll note that there is no mirror backing or wallpaper inside as lusted for HERE.

It was deemed too frivolous and a waste of money. Oh, Poohey! Oh well, I win some debates; it was obviously my turn to concede defeat.

I must say that I have allot of shoes; not for long though...

Upon unpacking boxes that have been in storage for 5 years, I found shoe heights that I now cannot walk in (eek!) and others that have become too small. W.T.F ? !

My feet have gotten fatter along with me apparently and my shoe size has increased from a 6 / 6.5 to a definite 7 / 7.5! ^# %&* (& $#%&@  !!!!

Anywho, life's like that, isn't it?

Although I had visions of my shoe wardrobe looking like this:

...the truth and contents are far more mundane. And, to be realistic, if I throw my shoe packaging away, how will I store them if one day we move and I am sans cupboard?

I decided to keep them in their original boxes (less dusting too) but they look so damn shop-storeroom-like now. I considered photographing each item and gluing it on the front of the box for easy content identification or cutting a peep hole to view but...

 ...some boxes have seen better days..and I'd like uniformity.

 Soooo, along with a squillion peoples before me, I am in search of attractive shoe boxes.

My first bit of research led me to Pinklily and Howard's Storage World.

They were too exy for the quantity I'd require. The Big W versions were recommended by a friend and were the cheapest option at $1.50 per box, but I think they look flimsy. ? And images of robes with multiple stacks looks messy! Ikea versions are fabric which I think would get grotty . . .

Then my thoughts returned to the humble shoe box.

If uniform in size and colour....

...and I was shocked at how expensive they are too. Even if purchased in bulk / wholesale!

I needed to think / look 'outside the box', and be creative.

And then I found these...

KASSETT Box with Lid from Ikea. They're designed for the office but for me they're perfect for shoe storage...
Cleanable / sturdy; tick!

Uniform in size and colour (black or white); tick!

Can be re purposed should we move; tick!
Very well priced; Tick!

With labelling space too!

Guess where I'm heading on Monday?

Budget friendly bedlinen

 Target has done it again, recently releasing some of the most gorgeous, on-trend bedlinen of the season. And very nicely priced too at $109 for Queen, and $119 for the King size (Quilt cover + 2 x Pillow case set.)

My favourite is the Black, White 'n Yellow Amber Rose design pictured below:

These designs are the newest range from Real Living (for Target) and have already made the cover of the November issue of the Real Living magazine!

 I'm planning on using it to add some zing to the Guest bedroom for spring!

If you like any of the designs, I'd recommend that get your skates on.

 I missed out last season on a popular design I had wanted. 

Oh, and you can buy online too, (like I did) to make it super easy peasy!

Detailing: Main Bedroom

So the main bedroom plan (RHS) has changed a wee bit from those submitted to Council (LHS).
This was done primarily to create a small linen cupboard upstairs as the main one will be on the lower level. The bedroom door shifted left and outside, the powder room was re-arranged with it's doorway away from the hall end. This created a focal point for, you guessed it...art.
I then utilised the odd shaped entry to the bedroom for a walk-in shoe and handbag cupboard!

Bliss! Mind you, by the time this is usable I won't be able to walk in any of my heels; a cupboard for old-person's orthopedics and bowls bag doesn't sound very swish though does it?
I deleted the Eastern window because I felt there was enough glass elsewhere but added a wee highlight to the left of the robe for ventilation and natural light. And the doors to the en suite were widened too. The plan and reasoning for that, posted HERE.

My inspiration for the decor of the main bedroom are found in the following images:

A pretty eclectic mix!
 I'm toying with the idea of painting the wardrobe unit black or wallpapering it in a black print, keeping the rest of the room white or pale grey as a contrast. I don't intend to use any turquoise (I have a obsession with white bedlinen!) but liked the details of that picture if swapped out for Taupe. Just LOVE the mirror furniture. *Sigh*
I'll might try to put a Mood board together for this room I think.

On the wardrobe side of things, I'm very undecided.

I had first thought to do a joinery robe like the left top quadrant which might be mirrored like those on the top right. Now, due to budget I'm now considering an open walk-in arrangement like the images on the bottom and adding a door to the end of the 'room'.
We had this in the last house (pics below) and it worked well, though we didn't have doors.

And as much as I like the idea of a dressing table within the robe, there's plenty of room in the bedroom for that and I can maximise clothes storage without it.

Any suggestions / thoughts / responses?

Taking Stock....

The lovely B, from B is Building a House tipped me off about some super Union Jack bed linen for J's room. I think one of the best things about Blogging is this sort of connection with others. You get to know their tastes and suddenly there is a national, if not global community assisting you 'find' that perfect piece! Happy Days!

 The tale of this bedlinen though doesn't end here. After gratefully being told of it's existence, I happily on-line shopped the full set. Ye Ha....Love the colours, design and quality! But....

...then I started to take stock of what I'd already bought for J's room. (Which is finished - see pics HERE, but unoccupied as yet) Eeeeek!!!! Talk about Britannia overload! 

So...the purchase was reluctantly returned (with the exception of one wee cushion. he he).

Another pitfall of building slowly (with ever changing decorating tastes) is that instead of 'building' upon the previous decisions, you often go off on a bloody 'what the!' tangent!

So I'm going to have a go at creating some of those swishy mood board thingies.

I usually use a book for this....(previously posted HERE), but it doesn't seem to be keeping me on track this time so I'm willing to try another method.

 Digital or big physical board?

I SPY: New Ikea Catalogue 2013!

  

Ikea have just released their newest catalogue. The 2013 version. The catalogue itself has been heralded as Ikea's greatest product ever! It uses augmented reality technology which seems to me to be a fancy way of saying it's quite interactive with the consumer who uses an iPhone. I found lots and lots of inspiration, new well designed items and of course affordably priced basics.

I liked this new bed design and the natural coloured linen pictured above and was amused to see Ikea 'hacking' their own furniture to show it's versatility in the catalogue. A graffiti chest of drawers might be my next art project! (How cool would this look in my 20 year old daughter's black walled bedroom!?)

My favourite palette of Black and White was well catered for in everything from home wares to art but colour was everywhere too!. I particularly love these gold interior ANGENÄM bowls. 

Very 'Tom Dixon'-ish!

The EXPEDIT range of bookcases have had a price reduction....yes, that's not a typo. A reduction! I have these bookcases in almost every room in my home....can't live without them!

So you can guess where I'll be choofing off to A.S.A.P!
