Plantation Shutter Problems

Apart from getting a company representative to visit and quote on Plantation Shutters, (no one turned up yesterday nor called) I'm having a few problems of my own with the idea.
Do you know of anyone who has installed Plantation Shutters over louvre windows?
I think I will have to get hubby to box out the frame so the blades of the window don't foul the blades of the shutter when both open. Currently all the windows are square set with no architrave.
This isn't going to be such a big problem to sort out but will it look OK from the street?
I have trawled through so many online photos and wasted days looking for an example of this situation.
Can anyone offer me advice, opinion or images?

  1. I must say I have never seen louvre windows combined with plantation shutters. But you guys are so clever and stylish I have no doubt that you will make it work and look perfectly! :)

I've decided that I want plantation shutters in our bathrooms (and possibly 2 of the secondary bedrooms), and MrB has been hassling me to get on with it because our ensuite window faces west :( Uggggh

    Good luck KL!!!

    1. Yes B, if anyone asked me I'd advise AGAINST this in my situation. So much so, I took my own advice and installed roller blinds that are failing their job miserably. We need Shutters - the prices vary widely and I'm in uncharted territory! Eeeek!

  2. Never installed them over louvre windows, but I had a couple of quotes for shutters in three rooms and I was shocked at the price, over $3000. I also wanted the slim 50mm blade, a la colonial style, and hardly anybody was prepared to do it, one woman even had the nerve to tell me it would look disgusting! So I have abandoned the idea and am now doing blinds.

    1. Yes Mel...they are definitely in the 'shock' price frame no matter what material! Can't believe how unprofessional / rude some salespersons are! (Not to mention the no-show for appointments are. Grrrr) Glad to know I'm not alone in experiencing this...or maybe I should suggest an incredible business opportunity for sales training....
I compromised on blinds and in my particular situation realise that shutters are the only solution. I've wasted the blind cost already....damn expensive lesson!

  3. I have had plantation shutters from a kit made to measure for my living area windows and i love them to bits. I think they are timeless and fresh, they feel like quality window coverings... I dont however recommend the diy kits as they are really not as easy as they appeared to be and took as a VERY long time to finish!!!!

    1. The salesperson finally arrived and I think the shutter idea may have been shot down in flames. DIY may be our only option if we can have them at all. Boo Hoo!

  4. Yep, have been in the shutter business for over 40 years and we have done about 30 jobs with shutter over louvered windows. The primary issue is that the customer need to understand the large buildout (box) required.

  5. KL, what material are you thinking of for the shutters?

    Your plantation shutters look amazing.

The supplier I contacted said that they stopped selling PVC shutters because they had too many problems about them :(

Aluminium ones get too hot, and aren't recommended for indoor use...

    Mdf is, well Mdf....

And wood, breathes and therefore cracks and the paint would probably peel.

    Can't win, really :(
