....and in breaking news

In exciting news, Johanna Griggs and Peter Colquhoun along with the Better Homes & Gardens TV crew, have filmed a segment featuring The Avoca Beach House. My husband was the builder of this award winning home designed by architects Steven Isaacs and Lisa Saville of Architecture Saville Isaacs.

I've posted about this home before HERE, and am very excited about seeing it presented on the programme and hearing what Pete and Joh say about it.

Screen grab from TV Better Homes & Gardens advertising
The segment will be aired on the 7 network
this Friday, July 24 between 7 - 8:30 pm.

If you watch it, don't forget to let me know what you think!

Admirable Architecture ...

You may remember a beautiful home designed by Architecture Saville Isaacs which my husband David built, and I blogged about, back in 2012. If not, do yourself a favour and have a peep HERE!

Last weekend, whilst perusing the Sydney Morning Herald I spotted Steven and Lisa's own home for sale, featured as House of the Week. It has the same contemporary lines and dramatic spaces as the Avoca Beach House and is environmentally friendly as well!

No trees were removed during construction of their semi-detached home which is situated on a waterfront reserve.

Located in prestigious Hunters Hill, the home uses wholly sustainable and recycled materials.
As the SMH article notes, this is "a feat that earned 'the treehouse' a spot on the Discovery Channel's The Worlds Greenest Homes show.

It should be no surprise that it has collected eight design and building awards too.

Can't wait to see their next project!

I've posted many images of this project before, including when Stephen & Lisa won an Australian Interior Design Award HERE for this house. It's so exciting to see it again featured in print!
I don't doubt there will be more to come too!

Onto the next room...

After high-fiving ourselves silly over the final completion of two rooms, we have taken our own advice and are going to focus on finishing all the half finished rooms next. I first suggested this over a year ago and posted the plan of action HERE. Well, at least we're consistent...ly... slow! LOL!

The problem encountered then was locating a cost effective joinery to cut the melamine sheeting for the vanity carcass (The one we had been using had closed down). We eventually chose a well known national company and tried them out with the linen cupboard shelving. Unfortunately, they didn't use a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) cutting machine which meant small inaccuracies in the dimensions, making tedious work for assembly with lots of planeing. Grrrr.

Any hoo, we'll try someone else for the main bathroom vanity but enquire about their cutting method first!. I have also since lost the vanity plan (although this old blog pic would have sufficed) and am now re-thinking the design. We were going to have two basins on a floating bench, behind which will be a wall of mirror. I still like this concept but am concerned about the limited storage for a main bathroom.

My inspiration pictures for this bathroom have been these:

Middle top: Architecture Saville Issaacs; my hubby was the builder. Middle left: Katrina & Amy The Block. Bottom Right: Minosa Vanity.
 And most recently this one:

Wolf Architecture and Minosa
Below is the temporary set up we've got showing the vanity bowl and tapware purchased.
I'm thinking of deleting the planned right hand bowl and having a wider bench space with a big drawer for storage. Maybe with a handle that doubles as a hand-towel rail.

Although we will have a bowl and tap 'spare' we can always store them for another project. The vanity top will need to be a white composite stone with this change too as I don't have a large slab of Crema Perla Marble to match the floor / walls in this room. (With two basins we did).

What are your thoughts?

I've also deleted the idea of wall sconces either side of the heated towel rails. After three purchases all looking wrong, I give up! David has agreed and the electrician can terminate the wiring. Easy Peasy!

Seeing Stars and Enlightenment!

Being an admirer of Minosa product and design for quite some time, I was very excited to see their promo, below, pop into my inbox. In home design sessions? Free?
Before I could say 'Yee Ha!' came the catch. Sydney Metro Area only. Damn!

I first became aware of these guys when we renovated our previous home (posted HERE and HERE). Unfortunately the product didn't fit within our budget then but they were on my radar.
I next saw their products first hand, utilised in the award winning Avoca Beach Project that my husband built. Designed and decorated by Architecture Saville Isaacs, Minosa products clearly enabled the architects to achieve their vision.

Anyhoo...

I sent an innocuous e-mail off, encouraging their new endeavour and which resulted in a serendipitous meeting between Darren Genner and I at Le hacienda!

I must admit, I was a wee bit apprehensive of our meeting... but was quickly put at ease.
I really liked Darren.
He was no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point, easy to talk to and non judgemental. He was full of suggestions and made me feel like an intelligent participant in our conversation.
Arriving with enthusiasm despite the challenging wet weather encountered and distance travelled,
he gave positive reinforcement to previous design decisions we'd made (Thank, God!) and constructive advice for others. Above all, there was honesty in his opinions and his passion for design was palpable.

The upshot of the meeting? I'm taking our joinery ideas back to the table but with much greater confidence and clarity.

Should you require it, and are within the Sydney area, I highly recommend utilising this incredible service, details of which can be seen on the Minosa flyer pictured above.

Exciting news! The Avoca Beach project has been shortlisted in two categories for the 2012 Australian Interior Design Awards; Residential Design and Residential Decoration!

I know that I have posted photos of this project before; ( 1, 2, 3) as it was built and till completion, but the professional photographs showcase the Architect's vision in both design and decoration and hubby's construction skills so much better that my iPhone snaps!
We wish Lisa and Steven the recognition they deserve!

I'm nearly done....

From ...love Maegan blog
I'm soooo close to finishing my Christmas shopping...thank goodness! I always try to be super organised but the last few weeks in the lead up to Christmas always end with me feeling 'over-it' and very Ba-Humbug! All I have left to purchase now are a few stocking treats and my second daughter's BF's gift. He's just splurged on an XBox so I'll get him a game but which one? If said daughter had made enquiries as requested I'd be done. Grrrrr.
Anyhooo, what do you think of the tree skirt above? I found it HERE. What a great idea! My gold, red and black skirts that I've used  for previously tree decoration don't match my white / silver theme this year and I can't locate a pure white one I like. I'm going to adapt Maegan's idea and use a white faux fur throw at the base of my tree. Another problem solved, yay!

The  project at Avoca Beach has got it's finishing touch... a mirrored stainless steel letterbox!
It was impossible to photograph but looks spectacular. Hubby was so excited to finish this detail but the back lighting is faulty and the overhang on the RHS is a razor edged accident that has already sliced my darling's arm so it's coming off and has to be re-done. Damn. No holiday yet for my poor hard working man!!! Makes me stop complaining about a day of present wrapping!

Is this the best BBQ in the world?

Although my husband has finished the major building works for this client, there have been months of finalising bits and bobs including building this custom made BBQ. WOW! I think even hubs is proud of this one! The top is practical stainless steel because of the seaside locality and the insert is by Electrolux. I love how seamless the integrated storage is. Lovely craftsmanship darling!!!
Now, Can I have one?
If you missed the rest of this stunning home, you can catch up HERE and HERE.

What do you think? Pretty spectacular, eh?

Miscellaneous stuff...that includes shopping! LOL!

When I visited David Jones at Castle Hill on Monday I was like a child in a lolly shop! So much to look at and only a few hours to take it all in! This tree instantly had my attention and the tree skirt was nearly at the counter when I realised it was cream and not white. Boo Hoo!

The fireplace joinery is finalised in the Avoca Beach project. The 'floating' concrete plinth makes more visual sense now. Such a shame it wasn't finished for the owners first visit. It will be a lovely Christmas surprise for them I'm sure!
I took delivery of this glass sphere / doorstop from Crate & Barrel in the USA too. It was another discovery on Ms Moth's blog, Moth designs and she kindly told me where I may find it. I tried buying this direct as opposed to using a forwarding service. The price trebled due to shipping so I might revert to using MyUs although it's so hard to gauge. This is Sooooo heavy!!!! I also got these silver Marimekko gift tags with my order. They're divine! They also come in red and black as shown.
