Happy Birthday To..... Me!!!!

Yesterday was my birthday.

The family went all out with wrapping presents and organising cards for the event.

An enormous effort given that I had bought the actual gifts.
For myself. To save them the guilt of not having anything for me.

Darling hubby prepared a beautiful dinner.
It was a shame that cooking the BBQ coincided with Home and Away.

In 364 days I will be 50!
They're obviously not practicing so perhaps their saving their energy to pull out all stops next year!

Exciting!

P.S: There was no husband or children injured as an aftermath of this day.
I had lunch with my oldest friend, (who is, unfortunately, younger than me) and was bombarded by cards, texts and facebook messages by other friends and family. I had a looovely day!

WEST ELM and POTTERY BARN to open in Australia!!!!

Cut & Pasted from Interiors Addict: Breaking News!!!!

VERY exciting news today! Well loved American home furnishing and kitchen brands West Elm, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and Williams-Sonoma are all opening in Sydney next year. I know MANY of you will be delighted to hear this because shipping heavy goods from the States just isn’t an option. Now all we need is Anthropologie

West Elm
The stores, which will all open under the same roof at Bondi Junction’s new Exchange Building, are the first company-owned retail stores outside of North America as part of retail giant Williams-Sonoma Inc.’s global expansion strategy. Who said Australia gets everything last?
“I’m thrilled to continue our global expansion by opening our first Australian locations in Sydney,” said Laura Alber, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We have spent a great deal of time looking for the right location and believe that the Exchange Building possesses the key elements for success. It offers us a central shopping location with easy access for pedestrians and commuters, as well as the perfect amount of space to introduce our brands to Australia.”

POTTERY BARN  Pottery Barn was founded on the idea that home furnishings should be exceptional in comfort, quality, style, and value. The Sydney store will reflect this ethos and will be organised according to lifestyle displays, designed to inspire customers and make shopping easy and enjoyable. There will be destinations within the store dedicated to living rooms, outdoor spaces, dining rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as feature walls that will display lighting, rugs, and window treatments. A comprehensive Wedding & Gift Registry will be available.

POTTERY BARN KIDS  Launched in 1999, Pottery Barn Kids serves as an inspirational destination for creating childhood memories by decorating nurseries, bedrooms and play spaces. Pottery Barn Kids offers exclusive, innovative, and high-quality products designed specifically with children in mind for creating magical spaces where children can play, laugh, learn and grow. Product categories available in the Sydney store will include furniture, bedding, bathroom accessories, window treatments, rugs, lighting, decorative accessories, classic toys, nursery essentials, and gear such as luggage, backpacks, and reusable lunch bags.

WEST ELM  Since it launched in 2002, West Elm has been helping people express their personal style at home with authentic, affordable, and approachable products. Each season, West Elm’s talented in-house team of designers creates a collection that can’t be found anywhere else, and works with artists and independent designers globally and locally to develop collaborations that are exclusive to the brand. The brand also offers handmade and one-of-a-kind discoveries from around the world, working closely with organisations that support the development of global craft communities and artisan skills.

WILLIAMS-SONOMA Since its founding by Chuck Williams in 1956, the Williams-Sonoma brand has been bringing people together around food. A leading specialty retailer of high-quality products for the kitchen and home, the brand seeks to provide world-class service and an engaging customer experience. Products include cookware, cooks’ tools, cutlery, electrics, bakeware, tabletop and bar, outdoor, cookbooks and decorative accessories. A specialty food hall offers a range of distinctive food items, from pre-prepared foods and mixes, to spices and sauces that enhance the culinary experience. The Sydney store will feature a cooking school and professional demonstration kitchen with a full calendar of cooking classes, tastings and demonstrations conducted by expert culinary staff and guest chefs.

The world's getting smaller by the day isn't it?

I SPY: New Ikea Catalogue 2013!

Ikea have just released their newest catalogue. The 2013 version. The catalogue itself has been heralded as Ikea's greatest product ever! It uses augmented reality technology which seems to me to be a fancy way of saying it's quite interactive with the consumer who uses an iPhone. I found lots and lots of inspiration, new well designed items and of course affordably priced basics.

I liked this new bed design and the natural coloured linen pictured above and was amused to see Ikea 'hacking' their own furniture to show it's versatility in the catalogue. A graffiti chest of drawers might be my next art project! (How cool would this look in my 20 year old daughter's black walled bedroom!?)

My favourite palette of Black and White was well catered for in everything from home wares to art but colour was everywhere too!. I particularly love these gold interior ANGENĂ„M bowls.
Very 'Tom Dixon'-ish!

The EXPEDIT range of bookcases have had a price reduction....yes, that's not a typo. A reduction! I have these bookcases in almost every room in my home....can't live without them!

So you can guess where I'll be choofing off to A.S.A.P!
Have you had a squizz yet? Any favourites?

I SPY: New shopping destinations!

Design Studio Home came onto my radar after an advertisement in ADORE HOME (as pictured above). Boxes were immediately ticked upon seeing the Jonathan Adler Dora Maar Vase  (I have previously bought this via JA's U.S site at a much greater cost). I love lots of items on this site: the D.L & Co candles; the skull ones of course, framed insects and gorgeous cushions and towels!

They have a generous first-order offer too....(Enter Code 20OFF)
 Mmmm, decisions, decisions!

How To: Easy art project for a child's room!

I started with a google search for some cute images which I sketched. (You can print and trace shapes too) I drew my design onto a ready bought canvas that I had primed with a pale base colour, extending over the edges. I always choose the thicker canvas' as it looks more professional!

Colour goes on next (there's no problem with 'mistakes'...simply paint over when dry!) and because I'm super impatient, I use my hairdryer to speed up the drying process. (That's J drying for me whilst I started dinner!) I'm not too fussy about the paint I use, but prefer to buy sample pots because 1. you get more paint for your money compared to tube acrylics 2. the paint covers well 3. is of a perfect consistency and 4. will not dry out in the containers. The paint in some of these pots below are 14 years old (from some previous artwork as pictured below) and were still perfect after a good shake and stir!

I first started painting because of a lack of funds to purchase artwork in the styles and sizes I wanted. The 'Aboriginal' work and 'Wave' abstract are good examples of that. I used house-paints I had on hand to save money and co-incidentally created something that 'matched' my decor perfectly!
The Bromley-esque nude was another attempt to 'get-the-look' without the price tag. No-one would model for me so I painted myself (with lots of artistic licence! LOL!) Unfortunately the proportions are out, (I look bobble-headed, the shoulders too narrow...) and it is too detailed for the style I was trying to emulate so it is unfinished; the background not silver-leafed. Eventually I'll paint over it with something else and steer clear of portraiture!

Any hoo, back to this latest project!
J got enthusiastic and creative along with me too! Yay! Far better than the PS3 anyday!

One thing I really like the effect of, is to carry parts of the painting's subject over the edge of the canvas. Just adds a little surprise I think! And I like using black as a frame too!

A tiny bit of fine 'fairy dust' on the butterflies bodies and bee's wings and voila!
One new baby, nursery wall-art gift. (I smudged her surname for privacy reasons)

This took me half a day, one evening and two glasses of wine to complete. It's no Rembrandt but I really enjoyed painting again and hopefully the recipient will love it too!

Do you like being creative?

I Wish......

I love everything about Lynn Ban's home after seeing it featured in The Glow. I know, I have shown you this image before.... however it is the image that has added more to my 'wish list' than any other; the zebra rug, the bookcase, tortoise shell, skulls, dark floors, coral and that Vintage Chanel sign!
And now I've tracked one down!!!!

It's in Lennox, South Dakota U.S. $750 + USD. And they won't ship to Australia.
Perhaps that's a good thing...? !
I've been trying to be 'thrifty' lately...(are you proud of me Mum?)

Loving my free Supre jeans / leggings / jeggings...courtesy of a girlfriend who bought the wrong size. They are as comfy as PJ's!!! (Sorry about the boots...I had a site visit!) and my $2 bowls from Domayne (which were $8.95!). Used my Country Road Spend & Save deal for some homeware basics including this pop of orange t-towel.

OK, this stag headed Champagne coaster wasn't on sale but....this gorgeous butterfly paper weight was; $5 marked down from $30! Yay! I bought a few for Christmas stocking fillers!!!

And bathmats were two for the price of one...

With all this saving....the Chanel light might have to stay on the 'wish list' indefinitely.
If you're interested though.... here's the link!

the weekend that blew away.....

Howling winds, freezing temperatures and horizontal rain on Friday night scared us off from attending the Rabbitohs V's Manly NRL game. J was inconsolable. I hate throwing money away (we had pre- purchased Reserve tickets) but I'm sure we made the right decision.

J's final Saturday Soccer match for the season was cancelled too. Nice one.
The 1st Nest Fliers were to come home Saturday for a finishing room clean-up but the bad weather delayed them. At least we had a nice catch-up Saturday night!

Today was miserable too. Soooo windy! Thank God we has a miraculous break in the horrid conditions to attend a birthday party at Treetops Adventure Park. J went to a party here last year (info HERE) but this year the children qualified in height and age to do the first of the higher, adults course.  J was quite challenged by it but still completed two of the three sections. Woo Hoo!
(I was stressing just at the harness instruction stage! LOL!)

I'm off to deliver the skull I sold on eBay tomorrow to an address in Lindfield. Thank goodness for google maps and directions! I'm feeling a bit sad passing 'her' on to someone else. Best to do so before she's named, like our Bali skull. Bindi.

I hate driving the freeway in wet conditions so am praying for a fine morning.
How was your weekend? Washed away like ours?
