WOW!

How stunning is this? An embroidery by Jonathan Riss who based his work on

  1. That's pretty spectacular!!! The patience... And precision...

KL, what product/s would you recommend for filling the gaps between connection points of skirting boards (when they join one another) the gaps between skirtings and wall, nail holes in skirtings/architraves and the gaps between skirtings and timber floor?

  2. I'd like to be able to paint the skirting boards in the future but at the same time I would like something that won't crack.

I've heard flexible no more gaps and paintable silicone are the way to go, is that right?

    1. Hi ya B. Consulted my in-house builder for you. All nail holes and gaps between joint edges of architraves & skirtings should be filled with Timber Mate Wood Filler, and when dry, then sanded. Gaps between wall and skirting should be filled with No More Gaps after walls are primed. Run a line across gap and wipe off excess immediately. Under NO circumstances do you use silicone for these jobs. (He was very emphatic!) Skirting boards should not have a gap between them & flooring as when installed the skirting should be 'scribed' to the floor line. If you have a gap 1. don't worry about it if the room is to be carpeted as carpet will hide it or 2. If it's really obvious you can try no more gaps as above being really careful to remove excess immediately. Not an ideal situation. All architraving / skirting should be primed before two coats of enamel paint are applied, sanding between every step. Whew!
I also asked him about your powder room dilema and according to the BCA (Building Code of Australia) no inward opening door should swing within 1200mm of WC without having removable hinges. It SHOULD, for safety reasons swing outwards in your situation. Apparently this is because of falls /deaths (eek) within a confinded space and inability to gain access because of body against door. Not pretty! Re-swing her baby!!!!

    2. Thank you so much for all that KL!!!!

      Sorry, more questions *shy*

      Re: Timber Mate Wood Filler
Yikes! MrB spray painted the skirting boards prior to installation in order to save time (and get a better finish). I was hoping there would be a way to just patch up the holes without having to repaint the whole thing :(. He is an expert when it comes to spray painting… but not so much with a brush.

Re: No More gaps for between wall and skirting
Our walls were painted prior to skirting installation. We used Whisper White on the walls and Whisper White gloss on skirtings. Do you think white No More Gaps would be noticeably different if we don’t paint over it?

      Re: wipe off excess immediately
Our chippie failed to do this and we now have No More Gaps on our timber floor in some spots. Devastated! Any tips on how to remove it once it’s dried?

Re: gap between skirting boards and timber floor
We won’t be carpeting over our timber floor. Our concrete wasn’t perfectly level in all spots and we didn’t use the self-levelling compound or whatever it’s called :(

I better put my lawyer hat on!!!

  3. Hi again B. Unfortunately the only way to fill nail holes is with wood filler, sanded and maybe only one coat of enamel to finish.
You can only try to go without painting after no - more - gapping but if your doing nail holes then do at least one more coat and solve both these probs. Sorry, there's no shortcutting here. David has no quick tips re removing excess no more gaps. His solution, very long winded, was painstakingly slow. RE powder room door, BCA is easy to find online. No lawyer required. We were just giving advice on questions asked.

  4. Thanks again :)

Oh, I didn't mean to say that I would be getting a lawyer, just that I'll need to speak firmly to MrB :))))
